The competition follows the ODI format. Its first edition took place in England between 7 June and 21 June 1975.

Australia is the most successful of them all, with five trophies. New Zealand is the unluckiest of them all, failing to reach the finals after qualifying for the semis six times. They have also been the runners-up of 2015 and 2019 World Cups. England, despite creating the game itself, won the World Cup only on 2019.
